O Canada

Canadian cans
I received a shipment of steel Canadian cans in the mail today.  What makes them Canadian?  Let me count thy ways:

     1.  They have cities such as Toronto and Montreal printed on the cans
     2.  The cans have both French and English printing
     3.  They are 10 oz. liq. as opposed to the USA 12 fl. oz. standard
     4.  Some of them have funky opening mechanisms *
     5.  Plus, the guy I bought them from said they were Canadian

* Eleven of the thirteen cans are pull tops.  Two of those eleven are still sealed and have the pull rings attached (they are different than the standard USA pull rings)

* The Carlton Club can is a flat top (this particular can was opened with a churchkey)

* The Crush can has a press button mechanism

  1. I remember Carlton Club from when I was a little kid in Orangeville, Ontario. My parents would by it in the supermarket, as it was cheaper than the name brand pop. The different flavours were all the same design shown in the picture, just different colours: red for cola, brown for root beer, orange for orange, and there were probably others, but I don't remember them.

    1. Thanks for sharing. That's a big reason I started collecting cans, just seeing some of the older cans reminds me of being a kid.

It's funny you said Carlton Club was one of the cheaper brands. Just by the look of the can and the sound of its name, I assumed it was a fancier, premium brand. I guess you never know...

    2. I, too remember Carlton Club pop in SW Ontario in the 1970s. It was pretty good and I also remember that the can tops had to be punctured with a can opener.

    1. This is a tough brand to find info about! There is an actual Carlton Club (they have a wiki page) but I don't know how the drink may be associated with them. I did find a mention of the brand at this website http://www.tazewell-orange.com/pocabottling.html but no real info about it.
I didn't realize there was a cola flavor of this brand, so I'd say that was a good find. If anyone else has any info about this brand, please leave a comment. Thanks!

    1. If you look in the first picture of the post, you'll see a purple Crush can. That's the can with the press button. I've since acquired a few other press buttons since I posted this. Check out my July 1, 2013, post. I don't think it was a widespread opening mechanism but several brands did try them out.

  5. I have a bunch of assorted brands of pop cans all with the "push hole" style opening are they worth anything?

  6. I've been digging at a new junk pile in a relatives bush, been finding old soda cans like you have, royal crest, chateau dry, carlton club, beckers and big name brands, I fancy phantom brands as alot do not exist anymore, where do you find them in such good condition?

    1. The ones I have usually come in large lots (50-150) of cans that I buy cheap. Some cans are pretty dirty, but warm water and a soft toothbrush does wonders to an old can.
